Tips for an Eco-Friendly Christmas Party

Planning for a bash this Christmas? In this last issue of 2011, here are some ideas and tips to make your Christmas a bit greener.

Earth-saving Invites

Start with some eco-friendly e-invitations, which save paper and even keep track of who is and isn't coming. There are several online services that will allow you to easily set up a Christmas party website that will even handle last-minute reminders for you.

Green Christmas Decorations

Try to incorporate fresh flowers, LED lights, and all-natural products into your party decorations. You can add fresh flowers as ornaments into your garland, wreath, and even on your tree. LED or light-emitting diodes will keep the spirit flowing while not sending your electricity bill through the roof. A simple 60-bulb string of LED lights over your fireplace or garage door will glow just as bright, yet use 80% less energy than incandescent lights. LEDs are also a safer alternative because they remain cool and pose little fire hazard

Permanent Dishes, Cups and Silverware

Don't be lazy! Plastic utensils and plates are wasteful and end up clogging up our landfills. It may be a pain to wash all those dishes, glasses, forks, knives, and spoons after a party, but so what? It is much more environmentally conscious to use your actual dinnerware. Your dishes are reusable and the earth will be eternally grateful for your extra effort.

Eco-friendly Party Food and Drinks

There are a few ways to make your table green, too. Specifically, organic and local items support the people who are on the ecological front lines and save energy. That is good for you and good for other people. Organic Christmas party food, whether you make it all yourself or buy prepared foods, can make a big ecological impact. There are even organic wineries popping up all over the world to make the holidays bright for your guests.

Green Party Clothes and Accessories

Look for items that have been made from recycled fibres or alternative fibres such as linen, silk or hemp sourced from as close to home as possible. Gone are the days when these fabrics were doomed to be coarse and unfashionable. There is nothing more fashionable than that little black dress made from renewable resources.
